“Burns Supper” – celebrations in Yerevan

10 March 2009 14:35

Burns Supper – is the annual celebratory tribute to the life, works and spirit of the great Scottish poet, Robert Burns (1759-1796). Celebrated on, or about, the Bard's birthday, January 25th, Burns Suppers range from formal gatherings of esthetes and scholars to uproariously informal rave-ups of drunkards and louts. The first suppers were organized by the friends of the famous writer on the anniversary of his death. Years have passed and this tradition has stricken its roots becoming the inseparable part of the Scottish cultural life.

Today these kinds of evenings are organized annually in those countries where people remember and want to commemorate the famous writer. Armenia is one of them. It’s already 11 years that the British Embassy in Armenia is organizing this commemorating evening aimed at charity. Although in the course of years the date of the supper have been changed, the main Scottish symbols of the evening – the traditional dish “Haggis”, the sounds of bagpipe and the Scotch whiskey have remained unchanged.

The responsible role of one of the cornerstones of the evening has proudly undertaken the Chivas Regal Whisky provided by Pernod Ricard Armenia. More than one hour guests, representatives of the diplomatic corps and businessmen were enjoying the Chivas bar, making informal conversations over a glass of this famous whisky.

Forth to the cocktail guests were invited to the gala supper at the end of which the charity auction took place. The Chivas Regal Royal Salute Whisky provided by Pernod Ricard Armenia and the 40 years old exclusive brandy “Sparapet'' provided by Yerevan Brandy Company were a big success among the participants of the auction.

It’s very commendable that the benefits of the auction will be directed to different foundations for charity purposes – USAID (improving conditions and facilities in a number of maternity units around the country), World Vision (providing special toys for children with special needs), CARD (assisting the development of sheep industry in Armenia).

Faithful to the Pernod Ricard sponsorship policy of respecting traditions the Yerevan Brandy Company and Pernod Ricard Armenia over five years have been sponsoring this generous event.
